The Diagnosis

When the client arrived with their VW Golf, our experienced technicians knew where to begin.

The client mentioned to our VW specialists that their car would lose power while driving and that the engine management light would illuminate on the dashboard. They said that turning the engine off and then back on temporarily restored their VW’s performance but the issue would soon return, along with the warning light.

It’s a problem that’s far from ideal.

At RM Motors, we pride ourselves on our diagnostic evaluations. There isn’t an issue we can’t solve during your first visit. To do so, our team use a comprehensive 15-step diagnostic process. You get no guesswork and no unnecessary expenses.

Investigation & Diagnostics

After confirming the VW Golf’s power loss and warning light issue, our experts wanted to check if the vehicle had any diagnostic codes present.

At RM Motors, we have access to the same level of technical information as the main VW dealerships; this allows us to provide you with dealer quality for better than dealership value.

By accessing the vehicle’s serial data, our team found the fault code:

  • P0403 00 – EGR Valve (N18) – Malfunction

Your VW Golf Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is a sophisticated component that can fail for various reasons, including electrical issues, mechanical malfunctions or blockages.

Electrical failures within the EGR valve typically produce error codes such as:

  • P0403 00 – EGR Valve (N18) – Malfunction
  • P046C 00 – EGR sensor 1 – Implausible Signal
  • P0407 00 – EGR sensor 2 – Signal too low

Given this information from the VW Golf serial data, our VW specialists knew they needed to take a closer look at the vehicle’s EGR valve further to determine whether the fault was electrical or due to a blockage.

A visual inspection of the EGR valve revealed a significant soot build-up around the inlet and outlet pipes. This indicated a leak within the valve, with exhaust gases escaping through small gaps in the gaskets and roller.

Upon closer inspection, it appeared that this fault was caused by general wear and tear and not the result of a deeper problem.

By accessing the vehicle’s data and performing a systems test, we compared the serial data to the manufacturer’s specifications. This confirmed an issue with the electrical data from the EGR valve.

Upon inspecting the valve, we verified that the wiring was intact and the signals from the engine ECU were functioning correctly. However, the EGR valve didn’t respond electronically, indicating an internal fault in the valve’s electrical controls.

These problems indicated that the VW Golf EGR valve needed a replacement.

Final Fix

Before our experts began to fix the VW Golf’s issues, they called the client to discuss the problem and our recommended solution.

At RM Motors, you’re always kept in the loop throughout the process and we only begin working on your vehicle when you say so. You’re always in complete control.

The client agreed to our recommendations and our VW specialists got to work.

Upon removal, our team discovered a significant soot accumulation in the valve, enough to cause its failure and the resulting power loss in the VW.

Our experts sourced and installed a new VW-branded part.

As your local independent VW specialist, we always use genuine VW or high-quality alternative parts on your vehicle. Having these parts in stock allowed us to replace the valve immediately.

Following the replacement, our expert team calibrated the valve and conducted a road test to confirm our client’s VW Golf was back in complete working condition.

By providing a comprehensive diagnosis, we ensured our client received a quality first-time fix, saving them time and money.
