What is a steering lock?
A steering lock is a security feature that prevents the steering wheel from being turned when the lock is engaged. On a Mercedes-Benz, the steering lock is activated when the vehicle is turned off and the key is removed from the ignition. It can also be activated manually by pressing a button or turning a switch on the dashboard or centre console. The purpose of the steering lock is to make it more difficult for a thief to steal the vehicle by preventing them from being able to steer it.
What happens when there is a fault in your Mercedes steering lock?
A steering lock fault occurs when the steering wheel of a car is locked in place by the steering lock, preventing the driver from turning the wheel. If the steering lock system is not functioning properly, it may be difficult or impossible to steer the vehicle. It is important to remember that a steering lock fault can be hazardous, so it is vital that you take the appropriate steps to troubleshoot the issue and get your car back to driving safely.
Fortunately, there is a simple step you can take to troubleshoot this issue – try disengaging and re-engaging the steering lock. This may solve the problem, but it is important to ensure that the steering lock is properly re-engaged after taking this step. If this does not work, you should consult a Mercedes specialist, like RM Motors.
How to fix a steering lock fault on a mercedes A180 sport
There are a number of potential causes for a steering lock fault on a Mercedes A180 Sport.
In a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the steering lock is typically controlled by a steering lock actuator, which is an electric motor that is responsible for engaging and releasing the lock. The steering lock actuator is controlled by the steering lock module, which is a computer that receives input from various sensors and sends commands to the actuator based on that input.
If you are having a problem with the steering lock in your Mercedes-Benz vehicle, it may be caused by a malfunctioning steering lock actuator, a faulty steering lock module, or a problem with the wiring or other electrical components. To diagnose and fix the issue, it will be necessary to have the vehicle checked by a Mercedes-Benz expert.
RM Motors’ expert Mercedes technicians use a multi-step diagnostic process to get to the root cause of the issue and determine if there is an underlying mechanical or electrical issue.
Our Mercedes specialists also inspect other components of the vehicle to make sure that there are no additional issues that could be causing the steering lock fault.

The clues
With all vehicle issues there are a number of clues which helped us at RM Motors to get to the bottom of the issue. With this Mercedes A180 Sport there were three big clues:
- The steering lock was not working
- The immobiliser was not working.
- The key was not being recognised.
With this information our Mercedes expert technician started the process for identifying the underlying issue.
- Inspection: He visually inspected the steering lock and the surrounding area for any signs of damage or wear. This included checking the wiring and connections for any signs of corrosion or damage.
- Diagnostic evaluation: He used the Mercedes dealer software to read and diagnose any diagnostic fault codes stored in the Mercedes’ computer system. These codes can indicate a problem with the steering lock system which helps RM Motors to narrow down the investigation but there were no fault codes showing on this A180.
- System test: Our Mercedes expert performed a system test on the steering lock control module using dealer-level software to check for the communication between the module and the other control units in the car, check for the input and output signals to and from the module, and check for the module supply voltage.
- Actuator test: Finally our Mercedes expert performed a test on the steering lock actuator to check the function of the actuator and its ability to lock and unlock the steering wheel.
The outcome of these tests indicated that there was a fault with the steering lock control module. So now all our expert technician needed to do was replace the steering lock control module using a genuine Mercedes-Benz part. At RM Motors, we don’t cut corners and that includes the quality of the parts we use as well as the service and expertise we provide.

The Fix
Replacing the steering lock control module on a Mercedes-Benz vehicle is a task that should be done by a Mercedes expert technician, as it requires specialised knowledge and equipment. The specific steps involved in replacing the module depends on the model and year of your Mercedes, but at RM Motors we undertook the following steps:
- Diagnose the problem: Before replacing the steering lock control module, it’s vital that our Mercedes technician had accurately diagnosed the problem and confirmed that the module was the source of the issue.
- Remove the module: Our technician removed the steering lock control module from its location in the vehicle. Depending on the model, it can be found under the steering wheel, in the dashboard, or in the engine compartment.
- Replace the module: Once the old module was removed, the technician installed the new module.
- Re-program the module: After the new module was installed, our technician reprogrammed the module using Osca software, to allow the new module to be recognised by the vehicle’s computer system and work correctly.
The steering lock module is programmed to recognise the unique code of the lock cylinder installed in the vehicle. If the lock cylinder is replaced with a new one, the code will be different, and the steering lock module will not recognise it. To ensure that the steering lock functions properly after the lock cylinder is replaced, it is necessary to “recode” the steering lock module to recognise the new lock cylinder. Recoding the steering lock module is an important step in the process of replacing the lock cylinder, as it ensures that the steering lock will function properly and prevent unauthorised use of the vehicle. If the steering lock module is not recoded after the lock cylinder is replaced, the steering lock may not function properly, which could compromise the security of the Mercedes. - Test drive the vehicle: our technician test drove the vehicle to ensure that the steering lock and the immobiliser system were functioning properly.
- Clear fault codes: Finally the technician checked/cleared the fault codes stored in the module and the vehicle’s ECM to ensure that the system was running correctly.
