How To Solve Audi Q2 Gearbox Issue
When you fire up your Audi Q2’s engine, the last thing you want to see is a warning message pop up on your dashboard, right?
That’s what happened to our latest client. However, things were about to go from bad to worse.
Not only did they have a warning message on their dashboard, their Audi Q2 would only drive in 2nd gear. It’s far from an ideal situation. Not only did the issue prevent their Audi from performing as it should, but it also significantly lowered their safety.
Luckily, they didn’t wait for the issue to worsen and brought their vehicle to our Audi specialists at RM Motors for a check-up.
Our Audi specialists have decades of experience working with German brands and can work on all models.

Issues we found
During the initial inspection, our Audi experts confirmed the issue with a thorough test drive. The gear issue was apparent immediately, so our team knew the issue would need a deeper inspection.
At RM Motos, we use our years of experience, skills, and knowledge to diagnose issues during your first visit. But what really sets us apart is our 15-step diagnostic process, which allows us to systematically solve any problem your Audi has.
With the gearbox issue confirmed, our experts performed a diagnostic test to see if any fault codes were present.
Fault codes are extremely useful as they paint a picture for our technicians, giving them a deeper understanding of the issue at hand.
During the diagnostic test, the following fault code was present:
- P1735 – Clutch position sensor 1 had an electrical fault.
Thankfully, as Audi specialists, our experts knew what to do with this information and could begin to develop a thorough testing procedure to solve the issue.
Digging Deeper
Now that our experts had the P1735 fault code, they could delve deeper into the cause of the issue.
By using the Audi technical information, they discovered that the code revealed the vehicle’s clutch position sensor 1 had an electrical fault. This fault was preventing the Audi Q2 gearbox from fully engaging.
At RM Motors, our Audi specialist technicians have access to the same level of technical information as the main Audi dealerships. You always get dealership-level care for better than dealership value with us.
To confirm that the Q2’s computer was seeing the clutch issue, we performed a live data check. This is something which other garages might not do.
The live data check confirmed the clutch position sensor 1 issue was present, so our experts began testing the wiring to the TCM (Transmission Control Module).
During our thorough testing process, our Audi experts found the wiring to be in good working condition. As the wiring appeared to be ok, our team was confident that the fault was internal within the TCM unit.
How We Solved the Issue
Now that our experts had a clear picture of what was happening inside the Audi Q2 gearbox, the next step was to remove the TCM from the vehicle’s gearbox.
To do so, the Q2’s transmission fluid needed to be drained. This is a complex process and should always be left to professionals who’ve got plenty of experience. Once the fluid was drained, the TCM was sent off for repair.

While we waited for the part to be repaired, our experts wanted to ensure the client’s vehicle was in peak condition. To prevent any further issues with the gearbox, we changed the transmission oil filter with a genuine Audi replacement.
RM Motors always uses genuine Audi or high-quality alternative parts for your vehicle. You always get the quality needed to keep your vehicle in peak condition.
Once the TCM was repaired, we re-installed the part with a new gasket and seals. The gearbox was filled with 6L of fresh Audi transmission fluid to ensure maximum performance. We even performed a re-learn procedure using our Audi diagnostic tool.
Now the part had been refitted, we ran the vehicle to the optimal temperature, retested the gearbox oil level and topped it up as required. This is crucial for the optimal performance of your vehicle’s gearbox; failing to do so could leave your gearbox with low levels of transmission fluid.

Before we handed the keys back to our client, the Q2 was taken for a thorough road test. Thankfully, the Audi performed flawlessly.
Our client was over the moon to have their vehicle back in complete working condition. And they were even happier when they received the repair bill. They’d received better value than the main Audi dealership.
